What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy which addresses negative thinking and helps you cope with specific stressors and challenges in your life.  Our Registered Clinical Counsellors, located in North Vancouver, have completed specific training in this model (see counsellor bios) and use Cognitive Behavior Therapy to support you in adopting more effective ways of thinking about and responding to problems and experiences you have in your life. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is intended to improve your state of mind and coping mechanisms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based approach, which has shown consistent and reliable success for clients who experience depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, panic attacks, as well as fears and phobias that prevent them from enjoying life to the fullest extent.

What is Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)?

Many of our counsellors are trained in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). Emotion-Focused Family Therapy is rooted in the belief that families have a healing power that plays a significant role in the mental health of each family member. With the practise of Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, our counsellors utilize the strengths of family members to address emotional issues and concerns.  In the practise of Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, your therapist will empower you and your family members to address different emotional blocks that interfere with your family’s ability to heal.  Emotion-Focused Family Therapy will help you to understand how your behaviors and emotions impact the other members of your family and how you can adapt to be more supportive of them.

When is Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) Useful?

Emotion-Focused Therapy can be helpful to address significant challenges in families including:

  • Parent-Teen Mediation
  • Sibling conflict
  • Communication
  • Family Transitions (i.e., Divorce or Separation)
  • Grief & Loss
  • Living with your adult child
  • Caregiver stress
  • Parenting in a digital age/parenting and social media
  • Families of children with mental health difficulties
