Child and Youth Counselling
We offer child and youth counselling services to North Vancouver, West Vancouver and the surrounding Greater Vancouver area to individuals, couples and families.
What is Child and Youth Counselling?
Counselling for Children and Youth is available as a support for Children and adolescents that have experienced challenging life experiences that may cause emotional distress. Child and Youth counselling also focuses on the unique experience of children and adolescents struggling with mental health conditions.
Children and adolescents experience similar mental health conditions to adults. Stress, Anxiety and Depression can have an impact on how children and youth function on a daily basis. Child and Youth counselling further breaks down the issues and impacts so that children and adolescents can understand what is happening. The goal of Child and Youth counselling is to help children and youth function in a healthy way in their lives and learn adequate coping strategies that they may carry into adulthood.
How is Counselling for Children & Youth different?
Counsellors for Children and Youth are mental health professionals that are able to facilitate a deeper understanding of how the emotional and social experiences impact a child’s complex mental health. Child and Youth counsellors have unique expertise and knowledge that allows them to support children in expressing themselves as they address many different mental health conditions and experiences in a child’s life, including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Increased Stress
- Taking on a caregiving role – (Siblings of children with complex medical needs or extra challenges)
- Adjustment issues (divorce, new school, bullying, new diagnosis)
- Grief & Loss
- Trauma
- Family conflict and change
- Psychological distress.
Counsellors for Children & Youth work with the child to identify goals, explore challenges, teach strategies and increase knowledge of how their brain and body works. With a focus on strengths, counselling is tailored to the individual child within a safe and therapeutic environment. Child and Youth counsellors use many different methods to engage with and provide counselling to children and adolescents.
Parents can be a huge part of a child/youth treatment. Responding with empathy and providing an environment of open discussion in the home boosts a child’s resiliency and maintains a strong attachment relationship. Child and Youth Counsellors are trained to provide an environment where children feel they can explore uncomfortable feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Child and youth counsellors can also work with parents to facilitate a deeper understanding of tools and strategies to use to support their child.
